Where they feel they need some hands-on help, I have trusted Recommended Associates and graduates of my No Fear No Force courses that I can point them to and know they won't come up with some fancy techniques, like lassooing them or backing them up into a corner. Probably my favourite is Jenny Major who was working at the Exmoor Pony Centre just as we started up the courses. She then came on board as a trainer at the Dartmoor Pony Centre when we ran later courses there. She was one of those people who just gets it from the outset.</p><p>That was some 17 years ago and Jenny became a Recommended Associate soon afterwards, became one of the founding members of Hands On Horsemanship at Horseworld and since worked with HorseWorld staff on and off for a very long time. </p><p>When Susie, the owner of two Exmoor semi-feral ponies contacted me for help, I knew exactly who to send her to, and her fabulour progress with her ponies has been assisted along the way by the book No Fear, No Force and the hands on help of Jenny. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_4wgEjvl7b9OWm5798Nd0AoFovQO-se2B-9ndhyphenhyphenR8UopmZDRfbgyaemhCvj40aKUVDBIdkqDxB9_YFLiI2wRUQhq9l6f1jKu_fLDP6Yq287TMWozOmXw8FLX_qCJ9wcv718y6dJX8Gc_aBcg3gAm-7-BQy4vGMxTe176ZGzW7b7gK9acBRvLrnUQHCI4/s960/423315101_900654785396393_9216377983631290928_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_4wgEjvl7b9OWm5798Nd0AoFovQO-se2B-9ndhyphenhyphenR8UopmZDRfbgyaemhCvj40aKUVDBIdkqDxB9_YFLiI2wRUQhq9l6f1jKu_fLDP6Yq287TMWozOmXw8FLX_qCJ9wcv718y6dJX8Gc_aBcg3gAm-7-BQy4vGMxTe176ZGzW7b7gK9acBRvLrnUQHCI4/w400-h400/423315101_900654785396393_9216377983631290928_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR9NZ83X12ZQvjflO6j72Kgk7pSLH7VKa-Y798_pOPW02sRK3SfHQCLS2ToQG3E6EMJ439OPF_NNJ7wFelkUNb_pzHO93g-Wc5m5BqwhqBHPN3lc5I6lrGSrA-RgZF7uKHoeBKmgsZpoC1dW8rKC79rXoVF2MKmUGyG3XaM04SwE9wx-bC_qPFNoWElpk/s960/423250041_900654778729727_2133306938858985354_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR9NZ83X12ZQvjflO6j72Kgk7pSLH7VKa-Y798_pOPW02sRK3SfHQCLS2ToQG3E6EMJ439OPF_NNJ7wFelkUNb_pzHO93g-Wc5m5BqwhqBHPN3lc5I6lrGSrA-RgZF7uKHoeBKmgsZpoC1dW8rKC79rXoVF2MKmUGyG3XaM04SwE9wx-bC_qPFNoWElpk/w400-h400/423250041_900654778729727_2133306938858985354_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP4RtSBIUll4rqzZWDs9WXIDZfBXeJtlbQ0WmgtEvfNkXF4UbLP0FGDKdkOtyXrHvNdixwxBFhj9ZbtUIGNL-_1qCS7YaZAVZkexUyW3_m6MXGgpf2Kcc4gh_QWwK_8iwEmtrI8WC3kPCfjQ4kdy_uDrCCijwCFZvIRNKWlZJkTX3r8WfUYFk2KmuGSpg/s960/427934586_900654782063060_3727191701693059182_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP4RtSBIUll4rqzZWDs9WXIDZfBXeJtlbQ0WmgtEvfNkXF4UbLP0FGDKdkOtyXrHvNdixwxBFhj9ZbtUIGNL-_1qCS7YaZAVZkexUyW3_m6MXGgpf2Kcc4gh_QWwK_8iwEmtrI8WC3kPCfjQ4kdy_uDrCCijwCFZvIRNKWlZJkTX3r8WfUYFk2KmuGSpg/w400-h400/427934586_900654782063060_3727191701693059182_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcwG2bN2-z6yMrEdAryrl-ce-vJA8j8AY3L5p6FrVellGIIleFSnkuvC2PE7alaiZwphGmVtvO4JXt20JiWXfBTLcA71WUQ0hec_KV0Y0f6PRcF5w5dniuiP7XdPdhqJLNLe6n6E03QMNyEnbVGJe9O6JNOSkXz5VFKQ3wunil0ykcEf_Npseu35x9WY0/s960/430211146_900654788729726_167875892625909244_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcwG2bN2-z6yMrEdAryrl-ce-vJA8j8AY3L5p6FrVellGIIleFSnkuvC2PE7alaiZwphGmVtvO4JXt20JiWXfBTLcA71WUQ0hec_KV0Y0f6PRcF5w5dniuiP7XdPdhqJLNLe6n6E03QMNyEnbVGJe9O6JNOSkXz5VFKQ3wunil0ykcEf_Npseu35x9WY0/w400-h400/430211146_900654788729726_167875892625909244_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>Not only can Susie catch her ponies, but she can lead them, pick up their feet, and ask them to accept a syringe in their mouths. </p><div><blockquote>"It has been invaluable to have both your book and Jenny to refer to for experience, tips and reassurance. A lot of horses are standing in mud all the time and are permanently wet. My fields are poached and the one we used before Christmas has still not recovered. My six are coming in to the smallest paddock and barn every night and they are having 1 1/2 bales of hay at intervals. This is keeping them all at a nice weight, but will be reduced at the beginning of March to ensure that they don't get too fat when the grass starts to come through again. I haven't seen them for five weeks because of the danger of slipping or falling, and David's day is centred around poo-picking and taking care of them, as well as taking care of me. Luckily I can do a lot more myself now. </p><p>I have been greatly cheered by a couple of photographs that have come through at the same time as book sales. I always love to see the ponies and foals that my book is intended for or has helped. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDcx-NPKZ5ER7KiFYJeIDK8cJnpHFASpn7z4VSOEjTB2rOWKzJI2zTdF75xq_Wo79okx1Fev40MijMQgp2ohcllKO31wtE5aw6bnYWrjkTndSGwGNX4wXCdBNLp1G8o6crIeS0wdwf8_BYmgktHOiLatW3CqINM2OaUhwb7UpwUqtBgg8PRu2aL7w5ZZg/s640/image1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDcx-NPKZ5ER7KiFYJeIDK8cJnpHFASpn7z4VSOEjTB2rOWKzJI2zTdF75xq_Wo79okx1Fev40MijMQgp2ohcllKO31wtE5aw6bnYWrjkTndSGwGNX4wXCdBNLp1G8o6crIeS0wdwf8_BYmgktHOiLatW3CqINM2OaUhwb7UpwUqtBgg8PRu2aL7w5ZZg/w300-h400/image1.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><div><br /></div>This is Esme and Maisie - Maisie the foal was a surprise! His new owner is an animal nutritionist and so there is every hope that the lovely old mare can be brought back to strength after a couple of difficult winters out on the Forest with a foal at foot; she certainly seems to have taken to a domesticated life in the past two weeks when she has been given three good feeds a day. Everyone should be thrilled with this outcome. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG_hhdjBrk91qSTEqRfTn3-Ij5FwaVOMeV_fRCsqucMXaIZEjL8q_Bbf-hBfU66rJfrtwoSqeKm6cRLpkLDRomIdhFfoWsKrW-PSzrbNKu7LcNKDv4LgJHUMmrGGK8SdbzX3ASneBoX5StUdiLARAUiowOAOZqovaEcdUS1rWWoUJPFJihgpUEwNOuhU0/s2048/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-01-26%20at%2016.23.03_02d4db8e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; I have been expecting the arrival of a dark bay colt, Mulibwanji, a pony who I took a headcollar off last year. He is due to be removed from the Forest because he is reaching the age of twenty-two months and is still entire. He is coming to me, possibly with his Mother, for a temporary stay before going off to his new home - all being well.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinpLg95oIPIHC_EEae1C2rizlE50rOFKPoucadVuodLh6mBhynOPGK6SAcyqpfZQ-csNxay2mhtLNe0S5tt8MQB_4RQAvzzBlX1f3k981wZkqaIfj6aRVpjwojwUOdC4v7VXWkHGzAKZB9HC5Ny3rp5_qft6UxRuT0_ZoWe26A-r4hGUHJpcLic8d3IJo/s4781/DSC06602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3726" data-original-width="4781" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinpLg95oIPIHC_EEae1C2rizlE50rOFKPoucadVuodLh6mBhynOPGK6SAcyqpfZQ-csNxay2mhtLNe0S5tt8MQB_4RQAvzzBlX1f3k981wZkqaIfj6aRVpjwojwUOdC4v7VXWkHGzAKZB9HC5Ny3rp5_qft6UxRuT0_ZoWe26A-r4hGUHJpcLic8d3IJo/w400-h311/DSC06602.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p>Arriving at the fields, I saw a young bay colt in my neighbour's field and thought "Oh heck, the pony - apparently without his mother - has been put in the wrong field." I made enquiries in every direction to try to find out what had happened, where his mother was, and considered how I would move him across through my fields without him encountering any of my horses, particularly my mares. Phoning the Verderers and then Mulibwanji's owner, it became apparent that it shouldn't be him. Was I going mad? </p><p>The pony was quite anxious and clearly wild, should I let him out on the Forest? Still, it is easier to be able to keep a daily check on them, assess their condition, and react when needed. Theoden is the only one that is showing a rib and so he has started on a winter feed with some supplements for his joints and his soles. Everyone else is eating grass and being passified with last year's hay until they too begin to drop some weight. I am particularly pleased with Jack whose body is reacting well to the Prascend. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeiqiNs7cvaCK5C5quGfEhBFrjH5Z2F0-TjFgXSjiZotqPC3cr0CLFh4Ji2KqPVBsh1O5UTsjtduFkkMDvy6nf5F1NF8FQ8OFivhnjUf5fwKrZPT-1k9mRwbxa8BrB7voFG71QCSpotlhip9fIv-EyeBF8bYtbcWh0cao7iTzTSgWsyEdP0GY1_AP1J80/s6000/DSC06557.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeiqiNs7cvaCK5C5quGfEhBFrjH5Z2F0-TjFgXSjiZotqPC3cr0CLFh4Ji2KqPVBsh1O5UTsjtduFkkMDvy6nf5F1NF8FQ8OFivhnjUf5fwKrZPT-1k9mRwbxa8BrB7voFG71QCSpotlhip9fIv-EyeBF8bYtbcWh0cao7iTzTSgWsyEdP0GY1_AP1J80/w400-h266/DSC06557.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Meanwhile, our work continues with bonfires to clear the excess brambles before we can put up the new post and rail fence. <div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjnYnUg6SJK0P4P6k0Nq1djJ5DoWjHFQj0I4_HuFJdUaXlG4i_mcvFhJ9n28uKHYzMdmc62oqlfEA5Q_cRtB-56MRPILT2IW6fTfFZfpejjU6qBh4wrac62HLEI-uwo8H83PkiNDseoM7-3bNLv39wkqHRyRYaOshyphenhyphenOjMGkS5f7YIkesSa0ag-Jcbhluk/s6000/DSC06530.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjnYnUg6SJK0P4P6k0Nq1djJ5DoWjHFQj0I4_HuFJdUaXlG4i_mcvFhJ9n28uKHYzMdmc62oqlfEA5Q_cRtB-56MRPILT2IW6fTfFZfpejjU6qBh4wrac62HLEI-uwo8H83PkiNDseoM7-3bNLv39wkqHRyRYaOshyphenhyphenOjMGkS5f7YIkesSa0ag-Jcbhluk/w400-h266/DSC06530.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>We have a broken land drain, so the next bonfire site is sitting on a stream of water! <br /><p><br /></p><br /><p><br /></p></div>Sarah Westonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09926981134163755858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3978022587495756656.post-4606241554211572432023-11-17T11:47:00.003+00:002023-11-17T17:54:44.477+00:00Gold Medals<p>Prince has won two gold medals this week with his favourite person, Ruth. Not only is he allowing her to put his headcollar on in what I would consider to be a normal way, but last night he allowed a vet to inject him and take blood samples after what is hoped was only a mild bout of colic. Ruth admits that the clicker training descended into outright bribery but who cares in those circumstances. This is a pony that wouldn't let a stranger anywhere near him only a few months ago. Kudos to the vet too for understanding the meaning of the words semi-feral. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwuVEv40IzmmTyc852OD-4OHsa9_HzAh8dMeM_Ooeom8mKsOtyt7yzGwz-SCrXmxnP5AALRekMXCH6UaGNbuw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzcsGFCH7atFPCg5rHNJwLpVc7TZaGh0y3lrEGddm69URdKpuw-HqBMO780PEvU-FzFKDweZaLInouxer8m6Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Sarah Westonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09926981134163755858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3978022587495756656.post-62637446630905077932023-11-13T09:32:00.003+00:002023-11-13T09:32:49.424+00:00Reassurance<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDL4FI2YFkwneQ8uomz0N4cp-H_9DvD4iFPOEoFmnsEPuiTffW1r2D-cy-J8cTONLPqZYT7RZpFSj-A0BDVamdpv-bsy8L86Lmk8qIMF8ETnbdQ4RtRXcs5A82H2YlS-z6IPHwKLaevMBF8RcNKkDEu5zDyzw1XG-P4oaAPdbMRByFnXjQwFzzi8KYQLE/s2000/WhatsApp%20Image%202023-11-12%20at%2021.31.49_2f5adbdf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDL4FI2YFkwneQ8uomz0N4cp-H_9DvD4iFPOEoFmnsEPuiTffW1r2D-cy-J8cTONLPqZYT7RZpFSj-A0BDVamdpv-bsy8L86Lmk8qIMF8ETnbdQ4RtRXcs5A82H2YlS-z6IPHwKLaevMBF8RcNKkDEu5zDyzw1XG-P4oaAPdbMRByFnXjQwFzzi8KYQLE/w400-h300/WhatsApp%20Image%202023-11-12%20at%2021.31.49_2f5adbdf.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /> Every morning, my friend Nathalie checks that all of my horses are upright. Following a four-year drought, the rainy season seems to have settled in and the grass and trees are turning green. I always feel it is best to put young horses in a safe situation with a kind companion to begin with and then to establish some sort of connection with the before even beginning to think about a headcollar. Ideally this would include access to a field - certainly after a few days - the foal following in one or more horses for a feed. The rush to shove a headcollar on can be counter-productive but also, not working with the foal, especially if it already has a headcollar forced on it on, can lead to it's own problems. </p><p>This foal, who will be called Dakota, has a lovely home to go to with very knowledgeable people. I'm pleased that they have got a copy of my book. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnbRET8D3O777NMfUfiQcbIQlhiPo0FpEWKFkx9hl47k-MfSjQD7fI5oL2oyV605rtIadNGuSeIU2-LSSMJothmTGtbyb_rJ-fFyAj9BWgjtdIZWZsb8nW_hiRvCfUo9gtYL_ubXadoI5cHRRrx1-iBptyPGk05X-YO7NG0fm9zvQV6eUnORGpWtikik8/s1023/395316437_302977882529048_9130971525858585022_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1023" data-original-width="843" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnbRET8D3O777NMfUfiQcbIQlhiPo0FpEWKFkx9hl47k-MfSjQD7fI5oL2oyV605rtIadNGuSeIU2-LSSMJothmTGtbyb_rJ-fFyAj9BWgjtdIZWZsb8nW_hiRvCfUo9gtYL_ubXadoI5cHRRrx1-iBptyPGk05X-YO7NG0fm9zvQV6eUnORGpWtikik8/s320/395316437_302977882529048_9130971525858585022_n.jpg" width="264" /></a></div><p><br /></p>Sarah Westonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09926981134163755858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3978022587495756656.post-76992270326833408582023-11-09T09:00:00.000+00:002023-11-09T09:06:06.591+00:00Undoing The Laceys<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeqNtRfiWo8ZBWs6rRiMRzgWL7zQPwerWJnRH6WskSQ2fou7hNaefnyyKNULvN_j_AgPf0OObVwnQGiA5sxAAgBaY3OhnEtzSdcQkvbiveEOHABIL83uUzc4LgGxzhw-bB8OFPhpn17NWNqdaH9tc9mo3T3zBsl1XEYrk4gioraC236DCNTkfxSTo3CYo/s6000/DSC06430.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeqNtRfiWo8ZBWs6rRiMRzgWL7zQPwerWJnRH6WskSQ2fou7hNaefnyyKNULvN_j_AgPf0OObVwnQGiA5sxAAgBaY3OhnEtzSdcQkvbiveEOHABIL83uUzc4LgGxzhw-bB8OFPhpn17NWNqdaH9tc9mo3T3zBsl1XEYrk4gioraC236DCNTkfxSTo3CYo/w400-h266/DSC06430.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Yesterday I went on a special visit to see a beautiful section B filly called Lacey. A well-bred, pretty girl with dark, dark eyes and the bottom of a sturdy milk maid, she was struggling to be handled. It is a pity that all the necessary but negative procedures that have to be done with young sensitive ponies serve to undermine the postive association they have with people - microchipping, worming, so-called halter training, vettings, worming and so forth. After her last worming by syringe, Lacey had decided that headcollars, which were already an issue, were now an absolute no.<p></p><p>Tempting as it was, to concentrate on the headcollar itself, I was keen to find out how deep Lacey's foundations went, and it turned out that although her new owner had been able to hold her head at one time, Lacey was not keen on being touched anywhere else and shielded her right hand side from any touch at all. I felt that it was necessary to go back right back to the beginning and to build and underpin those foundations. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrQl8kmWeZPxoobRR_aSROUi995AA3tzg3YQ3aIwbv5od8JJYpNF0u0Ic5G8nLwXDutUHlamhrplz7QaAcAYquuE5IEqdH7lJlAZYYjTpePIOp5qR6mllvRLXkEJZcKIDjdLz-9-O3yGz8BJJztMZWXfNUZdzugbE4KIRjEmIG_BJaVZ7Ad2V8wk_ENAg/s6000/DSC06410.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrQl8kmWeZPxoobRR_aSROUi995AA3tzg3YQ3aIwbv5od8JJYpNF0u0Ic5G8nLwXDutUHlamhrplz7QaAcAYquuE5IEqdH7lJlAZYYjTpePIOp5qR6mllvRLXkEJZcKIDjdLz-9-O3yGz8BJJztMZWXfNUZdzugbE4KIRjEmIG_BJaVZ7Ad2V8wk_ENAg/w400-h266/DSC06410.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p>Seemingly boring, I went back to the very basics with the feather duster, moving from the end of her nose with which she like to control everything, to base camp one at her bottom and then base camp two at her withers. Ruth herself was out of action because of her first horse related injury (will you tell her, or shall I) when her toe was broken by an errant hoof! Alex has such a calm demeanour with the pony, and Prince's reaction is to follow him so lightly. </p>Sarah Westonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09926981134163755858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3978022587495756656.post-46274831348269055652023-11-03T10:36:00.002+00:002023-11-03T10:36:42.945+00:00"Home"<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; A recent consensus showed that the number of cattle owned by the community had reduced from 3,000 to 600, mainly through starvation rather than sales. Wild animals, such as the Grevy's Zebra, have been supplemented with lucerne and desperate measures have been taken to ensure that any rain, any rain at all, can be retained. Moreover the population itself has really suffered, with emergency supplies being sent out from Loisaba Conservancy and other organisations. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzL1i0hV5Ty_sBebIu5E2upRg7OMeR0yrVaF_g4PsaHH0bVXIyqxMbw6dvov1BQC_8r8rv471lG-is4donFHg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><p>When my visit started, it was the beginning of what should be the rainy season, but every day the clouds would blow themselves up into the most fairytale cumulonimbus, turn dark with water droplets, but then sail across the conservancy and the communities to reach lower areas. We heard that Nairobi was awash, Nanyuki had enjoyed rain, but there was nothing for Loisaba.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHn8dUNmZ87fd7VKE0YeYd2j9OZibyygHAvoIew_RjrWm_LQqpQWC6h6LemnBTHxp319qz91KKhP_W0cNZh5k3jc1kTpHF1bEkXf3fMhzh0hRzEGTzFaUeR_6fbLWIT24_r0wTHG5-6v0nCIutqRIOVhhLKKIfgvK-ORqej43WvZXMFrd8xIwXjTp9iM/s8192/DSC08718.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1856" data-original-width="8192" height="91" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHn8dUNmZ87fd7VKE0YeYd2j9OZibyygHAvoIew_RjrWm_LQqpQWC6h6LemnBTHxp319qz91KKhP_W0cNZh5k3jc1kTpHF1bEkXf3fMhzh0hRzEGTzFaUeR_6fbLWIT24_r0wTHG5-6v0nCIutqRIOVhhLKKIfgvK-ORqej43WvZXMFrd8xIwXjTp9iM/w400-h91/DSC08718.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p>One day the rain stopped short of the conservancy, and the sky was lit up by a beautiful rainbow, sending hope but no water across the hills. I have booked him in for some body work - along with Dave - but also made the firm decision that I will not sentence him to a life of restriction and no grass. With that in mind, we chucked the whole jolly lot into the winter field two days ago, purchased two rugs for Theoden and Dave ready for Storm Ciaron, and watched to see what the results would be. We will work out next year, next year. </p>Sarah Westonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09926981134163755858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3978022587495756656.post-10515375889797752472023-09-25T10:01:00.002+01:002023-09-25T10:09:22.298+01:00Slowly but surely<p>It's been a while since I posted about the horses, but they are continuing to recover from their short bout of laminitis. Amongst the daily turmoil of deciding how much food and freedom they could have, Theoden has lost some condition. Their behaviour has been exceptional, quietly accepting any restrictions placed on them and making the most of any extensions to their boring routine. I have absolutely hated it. </p><p>We have been following the vet and hoof trimmer's advice to the letter - box rest, restricted turnout, soaked hay, vitamins and minerals, and at last we are now in a position to turn them out for about an hour on some longer grass which has been pre-grazed by Pie and Patsy. Of course I have been worried that those two would also get laminitis from the grass which is still an irridescent green. The cost of all this has been quite high too. Hopefully our last expense will be rubber matting from the paddock gate round to the barn which is an essential hiding place from the sun and insects in the summer. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBdRT0uSjmRUp9qEpTLmKzCBTbQMAr0hDu5ZG75vtYY6fRhoU1I_KYubEIybOv55MKfS_Xdx06SabHqtuJ5DNWijwoo6rn83G-_Xo6QgTCsKoAhZOimkCZt0ovWhIXjlenVL5jDLppfQ0-bK3z-ODgWN_xmDpYAxxRR9P8GhvddqS9CWE6sql0ffdAiGY/s4000/P1120303.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBdRT0uSjmRUp9qEpTLmKzCBTbQMAr0hDu5ZG75vtYY6fRhoU1I_KYubEIybOv55MKfS_Xdx06SabHqtuJ5DNWijwoo6rn83G-_Xo6QgTCsKoAhZOimkCZt0ovWhIXjlenVL5jDLppfQ0-bK3z-ODgWN_xmDpYAxxRR9P8GhvddqS9CWE6sql0ffdAiGY/w400-h300/P1120303.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Hardly beyond the gate before heads go down</span></td></tr></tbody></table><p>To date we have had:</p><p>Vet bill £1,000 + - and another visit in October</p><p>Shavings £250</p><p>Boots £185 (interestingly Theoden's hooves have gone up a size since going barefoot five years ago</p><p>Pads £60</p><p>Additonal fencing: £200</p><p>Additional feed and vitamins: £50</p><p>Luckily we had some things in stock, like last year's hay, some sets of boots, fencing materials and so on - and three hours a day to look after them. Publicity, posters, people and ponies were all organised for this morning. Turnout was affected by the weather forecast, and a myriad of other things that suddenly get in the way, but by ten o'clock there was a decent field of supporters and the ride set off. This quiet demonstration passed without incident and will have made a few more drivers aware of the need to drive slowly and with care around horse riders and other vulnerable users on the road. Add this to over 180 rides which have taken place all over the UK this weekend, it will have highlighted the issue of poor driving and failure to follow the Highway Code which states clearly that horses should be passed at no more than 10 mph (no matter what the speed limit is on the road) and at no less than two metres distance. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsTG-xIPRXGdCs7ooiGAf6RECotTC1yYCvlA3YnTH04XkJKmiz3qOng7s9MUZNHSlirnQ8AROXtREM7WPXtVtCmTNfP8f21nDjbKRpq5lSd57-uMmku4SxTIrnxI5rbLm61TulXgc2hIJQltYapO8gDqG-I6LA4igBtoP7Y9_2hppd2aKHG3fFF03bXJI/s2000/378570781_10160692544146351_5242691070457900045_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1385" data-original-width="2000" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsTG-xIPRXGdCs7ooiGAf6RECotTC1yYCvlA3YnTH04XkJKmiz3qOng7s9MUZNHSlirnQ8AROXtREM7WPXtVtCmTNfP8f21nDjbKRpq5lSd57-uMmku4SxTIrnxI5rbLm61TulXgc2hIJQltYapO8gDqG-I6LA4igBtoP7Y9_2hppd2aKHG3fFF03bXJI/w400-h278/378570781_10160692544146351_5242691070457900045_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>Not only are their surprised, careless, and ignorant drivers about, but there are those who disagree with horses being on the roads altogether and use their vehicles as a weapon of protest putting the lives of riders young and old, and their horses in danger. She agreed that the degree of laminitis and the changes in the big boys' hooves were very mild but that they had very thin soles. She was very clear that David's trim had unearthed an underlying problem rather than contributing to it. "It is impossible for a trim to make a healthy horse lame," she said. </div><div><br /></div><div>I felt a lot more positive having received her comments and she helped us move out all of the ponies so that Theoden and Dave could have a couple of hours of turnout. This period will be extended over the next few days/nights while we monitor them carefully. Both are wearing hoof boots but we couldn't put any on Theoden's fronts as yet because his hooves have become so much bigger than when he first went barefoot. I now have a pair of size 14 Equifusion All Terrain Joggers on order from Urban Horse to arrive tomorrow. Dave, who is one size smaller than Theoden, was able to have one pair of his hand-me-downs. Our shopping list also included some 7lb and 4lb hoof pads from Equine Podiatry UK, Thunderbrooks grass nuts and Progressive Earth minerals. He found little damage inside the hooves, thank goodness, although all four front hooves showed that the bones had sunk to a mild degree - otherwise known as founder. One of Theoden's front hooves had a very small degree rotation of the pedal bone and all of their hooves had thin souls. We have a management regime set up into the distant future which should save them from any further discomfort and degeneration of the hooves but only time will tell. It undermines your confidence in yourself, and makes you extremely worried about the weather and the condition of the grass, and even your hay. The vets tells us that there have been a phenomenal number of horses getting laminitis this year. </p><p>Luckily, I may have a few of my friend's mares coming in for the winter, and along with the toothless ponies they can do the first cut of any long grass with Nelly and Blue as the second cut.
