All Around My Hat

The last two days in Meru and so many animals within easy reach of the lodge. It was easy to forget that just a few weeks ago the National Park was as dry as a bone and the animals were faced with the choice of migrating or sticking it out.

I am always interest in that contrast between the standards of welfare in horse keeping - how long before someone would complain if one of my ponies showed a few ribs - and what wild animals have to endure. Just two choices - they either live or they die. I note however, that in the Samburu and Laikipa, the animals were supplemented and water brought in if the dams went dry. Where do you draw your lines?

All of these animals live on their wits, constantly alert for danger. They're used to fear and they're used to running, hiding or freezing. The Grevy's zebra below is one of just two left - and living separately - in the park. The other one has a Common zebra husband.
