15th April, 2012 Hands On Horsemanship

I was very excited yesterday to launch the first of our 'Hands on Horsemanship' Courses at HorseWorld with colleagues Brownen Packham (IHRA) and Jenny Major (MRPCH). We had hand-picked our students on this test run to make sure that they would be able to give us constructive feedback about whether the course suited their needs, personal and organisational. Lindy is a horse owner and a lecturer at Kingston Maurwood;  Steph is an RSPCA Inspector and horse owner; Anton a livery owner as well as the founder of the the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Animal Rescue Team. HorseWorld were represented by Karen, Visitor Centre Manager, and Suzanne their Communications Officer. Finally we had Jade from the IH office who is taking her MRPCH exams in 2012 and hopes to be come an RA.

Fabulous moustache

We worked with seven horses in total. With a student to tutor ratio of 2:1, we hoped to provide a tailor made course which can cater for people who have little hands on experience of horses to those that are more advanced and may have trained under various schemes including the BHS and IH. We can include training that is relevant to rescue organisations and charities as well as conservation organisations; any sphere where horse behaviour is a factor.

Here, Lindy is hatching a plan (or is she casting a spell?). The emphasis is on team-working and working without ego.

Students are given an opportunity to work with equipment they may not have used before.

On day two, we were able to greet the latest (overnight) arrival at HorseWorld. HorseWorld rescued 35 horses in a period of two months this Spring and many of the mares that came in were pregnant.

Lindy creates a bond with Dart, a gypsy type trotter. This was the first time he had allowed anyone to be close to him outside.
Groundwork with Sherry. Like many of the traumatised horses that come in to HorseWorld, Sherry is fairly nervous of people and a great horse to teach people how t be subtle with their body language.

More photos will follow.

Do you remember this little guy? He's the pony that arrived at HorseWorld at death's door and was recumbent for weeks. He had the physique of a concertina file. His will to survive was incredible and he has grown into a really solid pony. We were given the honour of starting the preparation for his ridden work and Jenny's group long reined him for the first time.
